Coleman was born in Blackpool, Lancashire. She studied at Arnold School in Blackpool. As headgirl, she earned straight A marks in her A-Levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman was the replacement for Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series she would play the role alongside Matt Smith. Moffat chose her for the part because she was the most effective in her interactions with Smith and could speak more rapidly than Smith.
