Beth Hart, a Los Angeles native she is a blues-influenced singer and former street performer. In 1995 she made her public debut with Immortal. Her outspoken personality and gifted musicianship attracted attention, as well as her live shows that were emotional and her voice that was compared to Janis Joplin. Chuck Taylor, Billboard's October 2, 1999 issue, said that Hart is "the epitome of natural woman," and that she was "bawdy and funny, and chatty with her choice in spiced languages, and free-wheeling." But that's a lot of white bread when contrasted with her onstage presence which is where the tall and graceful singer/songwriter walks around and blasts through songs with the intensity that is Mick Jagger .... At times, she's taken her place at the piano or center stage, where she sits without a shred of pretense, her legs draped across the back of a chair, conjuring a voice that is so tender and painful that you're left wondering what she's going through and in the event that you do. Hart had similar reactions to the moment she began taking to the stage at amateur competitions when she was a teen. However, Hart had doubts about the industry of music before it was finally an instant success. Hart ended her performance after she had a disappointing tour around the world. Hart then spent nearly four years searching for answers and working out problems through music writing. Then, ready to give her career a chance to shine, she came back in 1999 with the acclaimed Screamin' for My Supper, an album that saw Hart's songwriting skills mature through honest, vulnerable tunes about confronting life's struggles.
